A Look into the Past…

Last year (2018), EMLO put together its 1st Eddie Melo Legacy Organization’s Invitational Amateur Boxing Show in Toronto, where amateur boxers from Canada and the U.S.A., competed in what many have said, “the best amateur boxing show in years.”

Boxers also had the opportunity of meeting and speaking with former Amateur Boxing Champions, Canadian Boxing Champions and/or World Boxing Champions who would mentor them; the likes of George Chuvalo, Junior “Poison” Jones, Billy “The Kid” Irwin, Mark Simmons, John “The Iceman” Scully, Tom Patti, Nicky Furlano, just to name a few.

EMLO wrapped up the year as it started, supporting underprivileged youths and amateur boxers.

In mid-December 2018, EMLO’s Co-Founder Joey Melo, EMLO’s Executive Director Eddie Montalvo and EMLO’s Premier Sponsor Roger Dutra, travelled to Vieques, Puerto Rico with Canadian Amateur Boxing Champions Triston Brookes and Johnny Said and their coach Tony Wallace to participate at the 1st Vieques International Invitational Amateur Boxing Show.

Also accompanying EMLO to this event were 3 of EMLO’s mentors; Former World Champions, Iran “The Blade” Barkley and Junior “Poison” Jones as well as John “The Iceman” Scully…

Both Triston Brookes and Johnny Said won their bouts in spectacular fashion becoming the first Middleweight and Welterweight Champions, respectively, of the 1st Vieques International Invitational.

A week later, Joey Melo and Roger Dutra travelled to Havana, Cuba to visit the infamous Rafael Trejo Boxing Gym where most of Cuba’s Gold Medalists and International Amateur Boxers were groomed.  While there EMLO had the opportunity of speaking with the Director of the Rafael Trejo Boxing Gym and handing out EMLO gifts (EMLO t-shirts, EMLO hand wraps, EMLO water bottles and jump ropes and hats.

EMLO also held a Christmas Toy Drive at The Stockyards Boxing Club and at Cafe Piccolino.  A generous amount of toys were donated to hand out to kids in need this past Christmas. Donations to the Food Bank at various locations where numerous people brought can goods to help support less fortunate individuals.

EMLO would like to thank all of our Sponsors, Friends, Supporters,Amateur Boxers, Our Mentors and especially our Executives and volunteers for an amazing year (2018).  Without each of you participating in some way we could not have succeeded with our 2018 goals.

This year 2019, we look forward to hosting a couple of events and we look forward to adding additional sponsors.
